Yateley Hockey Club relocating to Eversley

Yateley Hockey Club are looking to move to Eversley in order to build a new astro-turf pitch.

Planning permission has recently been granted to the club, but they must add to the £425,000 grant Hockey UK have given them before building can commence.

Hockey UK have informed the club that they have until June to raise the remaining funds, otherwise their grant will be pulled.

Despite the clock ticking, many fundraising activities have been set up to help raise the remaining £150,000 for the astro-turf pitch.

Mandy Maskell, organiser of the 10K fundraiser, said: “We had a figure of £10,000. There’s no way we will raise that much money. I would like to think that we would raise £5,000.”

Originally, the club were hoping to build a pitch next to their current club house in Yateley,  but instead chose to put forward designs to build a pitch next to Eversley Cricket Club’s club house.

Steve Maskell, the publicity officer for the club, said: “We couldn’t get any room or any support to build it at our club house. Eversley have got one there so we would move the whole club.”

The Club currently train and play their home matches at Frogmore Leisure centre, Wellington College, Farnborough Sixth Form, Edgebarrow School and Sandhurst.

Jemma Siemak, a former player for Yateley Hockey Club, said: “It would be so much better to have it next the club house because you can go to the club house after training and everything is on site.”

Frogmore leisure centre and Sandhurst are looking to relay their pitches with 3G material which would be unplayable for hockey.

Mr Maskell said: “It became quite apparent that the local facilities couldn’t accommodate what we needed.

“We’ve taken the bull by the horns and tried to get a pitch.”

These new facilities will not only make it easier for the club to play but also help them in growth.

“We are getting to a point now where we can only have the astro for an hour so we are turning children away as we can only have so many,” said Mr Maskell.

Once up and running the club are hoping to increase their number of teams which would include more junior teams and an additional women’s team.
